A very common problem amongst the people is the (gum) periodontal disease. It may range from simple gum inflammation (redness) to serious complications that damages the surrounding soft tissue & bone supporting the teeth.
How will I come to know I have gum problem? (Signs & Symptoms)
Swollen / Red Bleeding gums
Persistent bad breath from mouth
Pus discharge from gums
Periodontal / Gum disease (gingivitis) occurs when bacteria collect & multiply forming a biofilm called plaque on the visible tooth surface.
However, if not cleaned properly & oral hygiene is not maintained the condition may get worsened and gum tissue can become more inflame, leading to bleeding gums increase in gap between the gums & tooth surface leading to pocket formation. (Periodontics)
Growth of plaque in these pockets increases & produce harmful by products causing degradation of some hard & soft tissues.
If left untreated the pockets will deepen further leading to tarter formation (calculus) & patient might even have to undergo gum surgery.
Professional Teeth Cleaning
Gum surgery (as required)
There are two types of professional dental cleaning procedures :
1. Dental prophylaxis i.e. regular cleaning
2. Scaling & root planing referred to as deep cleaning.
Scaling is done by using ultrasonic scalars in which the scaling tip vibrates along with water coolant & removes all the plaque / tartar (calculus) & stains that you cannot do at home on your own.
After scaling your teeth are polished with the help of polishing pastes & prophy cups which contains Fluoride to aid remineralisation of enamel surfaces & help reduce dental sensitivity.
The more professional cleaning / deep cleaning is provided by root planing & recommended for patients having lot of calculus under their gums with lot of inflammation & bleeding on brushing giving rise to gap formation between tooth & gums, causing pockets.
